Why You Shouldn’t Pressure Wash Your House
Dear homeowners - You SHOULD NOT pressure wash your house!
Interesting statement coming from a pressure washing company, right? Well, hear us out. The reasoning behind the statement is due to the fact that using high pressure on your siding is very likely to cause damage. (See photos below)
Now, concern #1 would be putting a hole in the siding. Though in most cases what we see is unintentional oxidation removal from the use of high pressure.
As vinyl ages, it oxidizes, leaving behind a chalky layer on the surface. Well, here in the south our homes get covered with algae and organic growth too. Lots of times it's hard to see the oxidation underneath the mold. One test for oxidation is to simply run your finger along your siding, if it your finger has a white chalkiness to it, it's oxidation.
So that begs the question, "what's the best way to get rid of the algae? Pressure wash it off, right?" Quite the opposite...
I see it every day, homes that have streaks all over the siding because the oxidation was removed along with the organic growth.
The proper way to wash your home is with a technique called "Softwash." This technique uses low pressure. Your home is soaped with an algaecide mixed with a surfactant to help it cling to the siding. The algaecide safely kills the organic growth which will help keep the siding cleaner, longer than when compared to a high pressure, water only wash. The remaining dirt, debris, mold, spider webs etc is rinsed away. This technique will leave the oxidation intact. Oxidation can be removed from vinyl too, it's just another process that's typically much more labor intensive.
